  4. Feedback Resilience Workshop: Gaining back your wellbeing
    Location: online

Learn to navigate receiving and giving feedback in academia effectively and confidently. Participants will learn mindset, strategies, and tactics, to transform critical feedback into opportunities for growth. In interactive sessions, postdocs will gain the tools needed to not only survive but thrive in the competitive academic landscape. Working as postdoctoral researchers means working in a highly competitive, international, and hierarchical environment. One of the most frequently named stress factors in research is feedback: how it is delivered (or avoided), the messages it contains, and how difficult it often is both to receive and to give feedback. And yet, it is an essential part of research. Looking at concrete communication methods (based on Nonviolent Communication) as well as at psychosocial roots for our difficulties with feedback, this interactive workshop is designed to offer perspectives, tools and practice to make both giving and receiving feedback more effective and enjoyable.

  14. From Pain to Suffering: Determining the Driving Factors of Burden and Disability in Chronic Pain
Location: Festsaal, Luisenstr. 56, 10117 Berlin

Chronic pain is one of the most prevalent and disabling conditions worldwide. Despite the devastating impact that chronic pain can have in limiting quality of life, we still have not yet been able to provide effective strategies to alleviate its burdens and understand its nature from a scientific perspective. However, mounting evidence substantiates that persistent or recurrent pain does not neatly correspond to the suffering that accompanies it. Therefore, a promising strategy for future research is to focus less on the pain and more on the aspect of suffering itself. The aim of the proposed conference is to motivate this shift in debate, both theoretically and practically, and to prepare the ground to better understand the driving factors of the burden and disability in chronic pain. Addressing this challenge is a genuine interdisciplinary endeavour bringing together philosophers, quantitative and qualitative researchers, as well as clinical practitioners.

Julia Rohrer from Leipzig University will give a talk entitled "Causal confusions correlate with casual conclusions”

"Correlation does not imply causation; some fields of research have taken this as a reason to teach causal inference primarily in the context of randomized experiments. This has led to some confusion about, for example, the purpose of prediction, and the utility of longitudinal data. In this talk, I will suggest that some of this may be strategic: Being ambiguous about the purpose of an analysis can be a way to have your cake and eat it too. I will discuss potential countermeasures, such as restructuring methods training and requiring transparency about estimands on the journal level."

The question is not an easy one, especially because there are very few permanent positions available in academia in the long term. How can postdocs make a good decision here? What skills are in demand inside and outside academia? What can help to assess the prospects of success as realistically as possible? In this short online workshop, we will explore these questions and develop initial hypotheses against the background of the participants’ individual situations.

Location: ZEWK TU Berlin, Fraunhofer Str. 33-36, 10587 Berlin, Raum FH 1004

  33. Grant Proposal Writing
    Location: online

Successful grant proposal writing is a fundamental basis to fund a career in research. There are plenty of national and international funding programs with different funding schemes. Each scheme has its individual context and thematic focus, eligibility and funding rules, submission and evaluation process, and evaluation criteria. Thus, the detailed features and aspects of a successful proposal in one funding scheme are naturally differing from those of a successful proposal in another funding scheme. However, the process of how to work out these details is a common denominator to the different funding schemes. It requires skills way beyond the ability to work out a research idea in detail.

  44. 41st Blankenese Conference on Synaptopathies
    Location: Hamburg, Germany

Brain disorders are frequently associated with dysfunction of chemical synapses – either causally due to functional impairment of specific synaptic elements or as a consequence of other disease mechanisms that disturb the functionality of these highly complex molecular machines for neuronal communication. In many cases, it is difficult to distinguish which of the two possibilities applies, although this information may be very important for potential treatment strategies. The term “Synaptopathies” has been coined for this highly diverse group of diseases. They can have acquired or genetic causes and can be due to malfunctions in neurodevelopment, neurodegenerative processes or abnormal interactions with other body organs such as the immune system. At the 41st Blankenese Conference, experts dealing with these different aspects of the impairment of brain synapses will meet to discuss current and future strategies to discover disease mechanisms and ways to combat Synaptopathies.
