CSB Paper of the Month 07/2026: Movement dependent neural substates within levodopa-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson‘s disease
A study on patients with Parkinson’s disease investigated neural markers for motor states in levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID), a common side effect of long-term dopaminergic treatment. Oscillatory activity was recorded from the motor cortex and subthalamic nucleus in 22 patients while dyskinesias were induced with L-Dopa and movement behavior was assessed. The results showed increased theta activity in the subthalamic nucleus and reduced beta activity during dyskinetic states, independent of actual movement. Increased local gamma activity and enhanced communication between the cortex and subthalamic nucleus in the gamma band were specifically associated with dyskinetic movements. The findings suggest that behavioral and movement states should be considered when investigating the pathophysiology of dyskinesias and developing neural biomarkers, and could contribute to the development of more reliable adaptive neuromodulation approaches.
